Parenting Tips to Help with Teething

Because there are so many symptoms of teething and so many different ways to ease the pain that teething causes, parents can often become confused. How can you tell if diarrhea is due to teething or an infection? Should you rub a numbing agent on the gums or give the baby acetaminophen? Below are some of the commonly accepted symptoms, as well as some of the relief that you can give to baby.
One of the biggest signs of teething is drooling. This is because there is more saliva production during teething. This is one of those “no-brainers” and if you’re baby is soaking through a bib every half hour, it’s a good chance teeth are on their way! The drooling can lead to a face rash, which can be treated with some gentle rubbing and placing a lubricant cream on the area.
Chewing is another “no-brainer” as this is another big symptom of teething. Chewing places pressure on the gums, acting as a massage to the area that is sore. There are many chewing toys made specifically for babies that are in the process of teething including hard plastic toys (such as a baby key ring,) water filled rings, and items that can be placed in the fridge to provide added relief. Because baby is experiencing some pain, they may be quite irritable and besides trying to find relief from the pain, giving him extra love and snuggle time might calm baby down some.
Applying pressure and offering cold items to chew on are probably the best thing for baby’s pain when teething. If the pain seems to be quite more substantial than that, acetaminophen can be given to help baby find more relief. Numbing agent gels are often not recommended as they can numb more than just the area of pain, causing more problems than relieving them.
