Tips For Roadtrips With Babies

Baby Road Trips Pack

After you have a baby, driving a short 1 ½ hours becomes a major ordeal. Don’t let having a baby keep you at home! Here’s a few tips to make your trip go smoothly:

  1. Leave early. Give yourself an extra 30 minutes for every 1 ½ to 2 hours you plan to drive. If you need to be somewhere that takes 1 ½ hours of driving to get there, you should leave 2 hours early. This gives you time to feed your baby and relax.
  2. On longer trips, stop every 2 hours and let your baby stretch his or her legs. If you have an older baby, let him or her crawl around somewhere. This helps your baby’s circulation and is a great distraction from the road. Of course, if your baby is sleeping, wait until he or she wakes up by his or herself.
  3. Be prepared. Pack extra diapers and wipes, food (formula and snacks), changes of clothes, toys, a hat, sunscreen, and bug repellent. If you plan on walking a lot, bring a stroller.
  4. Road trips usually mean more time outside than normal. Remember to use the sunscreen you’ve brought!
  5. Be flexible. Babies do not usually respect new schedules or plans, but they are usually pretty easy to work with. Stay calm when they don’t want to do what you do. Sometimes, you just need to stop all the activities and give your baby a nap!

Perhaps you were blessed with a baby who loves cars and sleeps every time you drive, or maybe your little one has to be entertained every time you get in the car. Either way these practices will make road trips more pleasant for both you and your baby.
