Tips For Flying With Babies

If your summer vacation includes a flight somewhere, here are a few tips to make the journey more pleasant.
- Plan on check-in taking a few extra minutes. Airlines have additional paper work for babies.
- Most airlines will consider a child under 2 years old a “lap child” and not require you to purchase a ticket for him or her. If you want to guarantee a separate seat for your baby, though, you need to buy a ticket.
- You can plan on “gate checking” your car seat or stroller. It qualifies as a personal safety device (like a wheelchair) and will not count as one of your two checked bags or a carry on.
- Airline security will not allow more than 3 ounces of fluids or gels in your carry-on. This includes formula, water, and diaper gels. The airlines will usually give you water on the flight to mix your formula for free.
- Check as much as you possibly can. Bringing a baby guarantees you need more stuff with you during the flight. Simplify as much as you can.
- Many larger jets now have changing boards in the “bathroom.” Most smaller planes, however, do not. Bring a plastic bag to wrap your dirty diapers in, just in case you need to change your baby on the floor in the back of the plane.
- Remember to carry on diapers, wipes, snacks, and toys!
Flying with a baby is a great way to get around during a vacation. Be flexible, and enjoy the trip!
