When is Baby Ready To Eat

When is your child old enough to feed himself? According to the website Kid’s Health, most children are ready to feed themselves by the time they are nine months old. At this age, children have most likely learned how to pick things up between their thumb and forefinger.
Your little one will not be very coordinated in the beginning, but it is very important to allow him to feed himself as much as he is able. This will help him to become more independent and children love to learn new skills.
Introducing finger foods can be as simple as presenting a few small pieces of food on his plate and letting him figure out what to do next. Some foods make great finger foods for baby. Examples would be fully cooked vegetables such as carrots or green beans, soft fruits such as bananas and peaches, and soft crackers.
As important as it is to allow your child some independence at dinnertime, it is also important not to allow baby to become solely dependent on himself for all of his food. Parents will still want to feed baby themselves to ensure that all of his nutritional needs are met. At this age there are still many foods that baby needs that are not finger foods. Vitamin and mineral rich cereals are an important part of baby’s diet. And your child may tire easily when feeding himself. Parents will still need to make sure that their child is eating enough food.
