What’s In A Name?

How do parents choose a name for their newborn? According to Access Hollywood, actress Halle Berry and boyfriend Gabriel Aubry waited until they were preparing to leave the hospital to give their daughter a name.

Berry explained, “For us it was hard to name the most important person in our life until we met her.”

Berry and Aubry decided to name their 7 pound 4 ounce bundle of joy Nahla Ariela Aubry. According to the website BabyNamer.com, Nahla is an Arabic name meaning “drink of water” and Ariela is a Hebrew name meaning “God’s lioness.”

But does a baby’s name shape who they will become as an adult? Does it matter if your son is named John or Sylvan? Maybe, maybe not.

There are some things you may want to take into consideration when naming your baby. One would be the spelling. Is the name you’ve chosen a name that will need to be spelled out for your child’s entire life and may even be difficult for your child to spell when learning to write? Or perhaps your child’s name will be mispronounced on a regular basis.

Another thing to think about is nicknames. Some parents use a child’s nickname more than the actual name on the birth certificate. Other parents prefer a child be called by their given name and only their given name. Keeping potential nicknames in mind will be helpful if you consider that an important aspect of a name.

And some parents aren’t concerned with spelling, pronunciation, or nicknames. They choose a name based on what name they like or, in the case of Halle Berry, what name suits the long-awaited baby that you finally get to meet.
