Baby Orajel Product Review

A baby’s first teeth usually cut through the gums when the baby is between six and twelve months old. Often the final week before a tooth surfaces can be the most painful. Signs of this final approach include your baby drooling frequently, chewing on hands, and even biting. If your baby will let you look at his or her gums, you will probably see swollen spots that almost look like mini-volcanoes growing where the tooth is about to surface.
Baby Orajel is designed to remove the pain by topically numbing the gums it touches. If your baby can’t feel the teeth, the teeth can’t hurt! Baby Orajel comes in 4 styles: teething pain medicine gel, nighttime formula (also a gel), a liquid, and a pain swab. The two gels are cherry-flavored, and the liquid is veryberry-flavored. The pain swab is marketed as being more portable, but all the styles are very small and easily fit in a purse. The active ingredient is Benzocaine. The nighttime formula is 10% Benzocaine where as the regular gel is 7.5 (Interestingly, Orajel also makes adult products where the regular strength is 10% Benzocaine and the maximum strength is 20%.).
My baby enjoyed the flavor, but (not surprisingly!) did not like having someone’s hand in her mouth applying the medicine. It does take effect immediately, and my baby smacked her lips a few times to experiment with the new sensation. Her eye-brows pressed together, as if to say “Weird!” and then she was happy. By the time the medicine had worn off, her teeth had stopped hurting.
The obvious side-effect is that if you are not careful in your application you may numb parts of your baby’s tongue and cheeks. Depending on the severity of your baby’s pain, this may be worth it. The additional Benzocaine in the nighttime formula may make your baby drowsy, so only use it before bed. Other rare side-effects of Benzocaine may include dizziness and blurred vision, but given the amount administered for teething pain (a pea size drop), these are extremely unlikely. Do not give it to an infant under four months old or a baby sensitive to medications.
I happily recommend Baby Orajel for teething pain!
