Changing Your Baby’s Routine

Baby Boomers!

As summer approaches, routines often need to change. Routines are extremely important for babies: there are few things a baby has any control over. A routine give babies a chance to expect something to happen and then experience exactly what they were expecting. Here are a few tips for changing a routine.

  1. Change only one thing at a time. If you want to move the nap time from 2:00 in the afternoon to 11:00 in the morning, make sure you keep everything besides the time the same. For example, if you normally eat a snack and read a book before nap time, make sure you still eat a snack a read a book before the new nap time.
  2. Major changes can be frustrating for babies, and may affect them physically. Make sure your baby still gets enough sleep, a balanced diet, and basic vitamins to keep his or her immune system strong.
  3. Sometimes a treat can help your baby relax. For example, If you plan on flying for a vacation and you know that will interrupt your baby’s routine, but it’s only one day, try bringing a snack that will help your baby stay calm. Some easy ideas are a new flavor of animal crackers, dried fruit, or a new dry cereal (like flavored Cheerios).

Finally, remember many things can stress your baby out. If you stay calm, your baby will settle down much faster!
