Another Baby on the Way – Explaining Pregnancy to Kids
When mom gets pregnant with another baby, sometimes they get so engrossed with the pregnancy that they tend to forget about the kids. Which should not be the case. Pregnancy is exciting as it is stressful at times, especially if you have already older babies at home.
How do we make them understand a pregnant mom’s situation and help to make the pregnancy enjoyable? Here are some tips.

Pregnancy and Older Kids
First, talk to your child and tell him in simplest words about your/your wife’s pregnancy. Do not start telling him that Mom swallowed some large watermelon – it’s just plain wrong. Practice good parenting. Instead, find words that will make your child understand that inside the mother’s womb is a baby, which will come in a few months.
If you explained it correctly, the child will naturally get curious of what you just said. And then he/she’ll keep asking questions such as “Where did the baby comes from?”, “What is he doing inside?”, “How does it comes out of Mommy’s tummy?”. The answer to those are simply the truth. Children have intense memory of what we say, do and how we do it. Let us not deceive them with lies.
And to help you with that, I looked for products that would easily explain the pregnancy to elder kids. It covers wide topics such as – explaining pregnancy effects to the mom and the rest of the family, what does the new baby needs, etc.

Some tips to make your kids cooperative during your/your wife’s pregnancy:
1) Let them pick items for the new baby.
2) Bring them along on your appointment with your OB-Gyne.
3) Let them feel your growing tummy.
4) Take them to prenatal meetings with you.
5)Ask for baby names from them.
6)Decorate the baby room with their help.
It is important that, however small, children will feel that they are part of the pregnancy and not cast out. That there is no reason to be jealous or feel left by the arrival of the new member of the family. Let them feel that pregnancy is not just a Mommy thing, but a gift for the whole family.
