Did Sanlu Infant Formula Really Undergo Quality Control?

Milk is essential to a baby’s growth. But apparently, the proper protocol in determining how safe and tested infant formula today seems to be overlooked. Just look at this scandal over at China, a country that has become famous for recalls in the past months. Now it is teetering on the brink of disaster as they have had over a thousand babies suffering from a contaminated milk formula now popularly known as Sanlu.
Nearly 160 babies are suffering from acute kidney failure and more than 1,300 are still in hospital, Chen said. Free medical care is being offered to all of the sick babies and officials are setting up an information hotline.
Officials believe that suppliers to China’s dairy companies have added melamine, a banned substance used in the manufacture of plastic products, to watered-down milk so it would appear to have a higher protein content.
Of the dairy companies tested so far, investigators have found that 20 per cent have sold products tainted with the chemical.
Tests have confirmed that all of the sick babies consumed milk powder produced by Sanlu Group Co., Chen said.
Seeing the images of these babies suffering due to some lapse in the quality control process of the government is totally unacceptable. Dealing with objects as furniture for defects is one thing but overlooking the health of little babies who go as far as having to contend with health issues such as kidneys at quite an early age is something that has to drive any parent crazy.
