Co-Sleeping- A Tired Controversy?

What is co-sleeping?

Co-Sleeping in the simplest definition is the practice of bed sharing and having your little one in your bed at night.   The practice of bed sharing is  itself one popular around the globe.  It’s become a taboo in both in North America and the UK due to fears of crib death (otherwise known as SIDS).  Some however question this research, wondering if perhaps these fears are indeed unfounded.

Studies On Co-Sleeping

As with most things it seems that there is a new study all the time done to “prove” co-sleeping harmful or not.  The latest study from the UK states:

However, it parents avoided all the other risk factors, sleeping in a bed with their baby proved no more risky than putting them in a cot in their parents’ room.

Childcare experts said last night that the news would be received with relief by many parents, while midwives said it would help them to provide better advice.

Safe Slumber?

One Doctor wrote in regards to the link between SIDS and co-sleeping:

Well, Dr. Thatch, if you were to read other studies, you would learn that there is “good bed-sharing” and “risky bed-sharing.” When the adult-bed sleeping infant is not accompanied by a conscientious, non-smoking adult, SIDS is higher.

Dr. Linda Folden Palmer the Doctor quoted above points out many other links to the SIDS rates that the prior studies may not have even considered.

I’d like to hear your opinions readers, what do you personally think of co-sleeping?   Would this new study change your mind on it?
