Barbie Girl in a Barbie World (Sorta)
Admittedly I still have all my (surviving) Barbies, even my shall we say.. more ‘creative’ ones. Now, she’s turning the big 50 and she’s still causing mayhem the same girl- on the inside. The only one that’s managed to escape the wrath of the attic (and markers, scissors, and microwave) is for the most part my Navy Officer Barbie.
What is it about her plastic 12 in frame that seems to cause so much contention? We all know she has that unobtainable figure, but did anyone really attempt to post their own body after her? (Well, I mean save for this woman).
There were points in my childhood where yeah, I decimated many a Barbie doll. I was always a bit on the creative side, so naturally that was usually expressed through hair cutting, marker ‘dye’ for her hair, and many ‘body modifications’.
There’s no doubt there’s something about Barbie that just screams ‘customize me‘. She’s was one of my own first sculptures (so, yeah there is a soft spot still for the doll).
Barbie is still the reining queen on the toy shelves. Who know what the future will hold?
(Cue sappy music here)
