Surrogates, Families Facing Woes

Carrying a child for 9 months is a tough thing, pregnancy can take it’s huge toll on a mom’s body, it can change your body forever.    Some woman, due to infertility or other issues choose to use a surrogate to carry their child for the 9 months gestation period.

Many of these surrogate pregnancies go off without too much in the way of a hitch, and everyone winds up happy.  The potential parents receive the child they longed for, and the surrogate receives money for the time and amazing gift.

Many surrogacy firms exist across the world to connect surrogates with parents longing for a child.  In the United States, two firms have been experiencing some money woes, and has stopped paying the surrogates. Although, the money is claimed to be in trusts there is no evidence to support this notion.

SurroGenesis USA, is one of the firms.  Many women who are surrogates for the firm haven’t been paid at all, and at least one has been evicted.  

According to the payment schedule listed on the SurroGenesis website, prospective parents paid the company a $12,000 fee.

The company also required payment to surrogate mothers of at least $18,000, as well as legal fees and money for maternity clothing, medical care and other expenses that add thousands to the bill.

To pay those costs, SurroGenesis recommended that prospective parents set up trust funds administered by the Michael Charles group, clients said Friday.

The money now seems to have just disappeared.  

Law enforcement is investigating the companies, although that still doesn’t offer any real closure for anyone involved.  One potential father had this to say (From the same article as above):

For the last two weeks, his wife had been knitting a blanket for a baby, he said, that may never come. “Today she said to me, when we found out we won’t be having a baby, that we need to give this blanket to someone that can use it.”
