A Juicy Dilemma: When Should Baby Get Juice?

There are some people who don’t see giving their baby a bit of juice as a bad thing, after all it’s fruit right? Then there are the people who worry and refuse to give it to their kids altogether.
This website gives a few reasons to avoid it, for a bit anyway:
- Because of the sugars in juice, it can cause diarrhea.
- Too much juice can cause a child to be overweight or obese.
- Juice contains sugars and acids that can cause tooth decay.
- Giving your baby too much juice can hinder growth and development, and can cause malnutrition and anemia due to lack of nutrients like proteins and complex carbohydrates.
- If you are still breastfeeding, juice can cause your baby to nurse less.
True, too much juice can cause any kid to loose their appetite that’s a given. Pediatricians have recommended to dilute the juice with water as to decrease the sugar content.
Although juice is far from required for a baby, the recommended age to give the diluted juice to your child is about 6 months old. Obviously, you can (and are usually recommended) to wait longer than that. Although, a bit here and there more than likely won’t do any harm (I’m not a doctor, so ask your pediatrician!).
Most doctors suggest that starting baby on water (ask your child’s pediatrician for their suggested age) may help then become accustomed to it as opposed to the sweetness of the juice.
