Childhood Obesity Solution?: Reinstate Recess
Scientists studying obesity in children may have found a link to rapid weight gain in babies and childhood obesity starting around age three. In a nutshell, now the blame for childhood obesity is being firmly placed at the foot of baby fat.
Childhood obesity raises many health problems in a growing child, health problems that continue into adulthood. In times where they are getting rid of recess, and America is going through an obesity epidemic perhaps instead of trying to pinpoint so many random causes, we work toward an exercise goal. Reinstating recess, and lifting all the bans on games would indeed be a good start.
Instead of implementing more rules and regulations, we start using common sense. Encouraging children to go outside and play, instead of taking away recess, kickball, and all that we instead work to actually encourage play.
It seems we are setting ourselves and our kids up for a lifetime of problems by banning a wide variety of pass times for completely silly and ridiculous reasoning. The best example, and one of the most recent is the school in Milford, CT who banned all physical contact between kids, due to a fight.
It just makes no sense, recess and some of the favorite childhood sports were banned due to silly reasons also. By limiting the amount of physical activity children have during the day, you also cause a huge variety of issues, among which are the inability to concentrate, and obesity.
