Plastic Surgery, Bullying, and Kids

The two words that really don’t seem to fit into the same sentence, let alone the same topic are plastic surgery and children.  Yet, more and more kids are wanting to augment their body somehow. Be it to reduce bullying, or another of the many reasons.  The trend is growing in younger and younger children.

I was reading this article, and quite frankly it bothered me.

Younger and younger kids are taking so many issues with their own bodies and trying to diet.  Some 12 year olds are actually getting liposuction and tummy tucks.  That’s not even an isolated case.

Everywhere kid’s, or anyone for that matter go you are bombarded by unobtainable and highly edited pictures of models and stars.  They are promoting these as the ‘ideal’ alongside stories of unphotoshopped images of celebrities being called ‘fat’ when they are if anything smaller than average.

Bulling can also play a huge role in a child’s self esteem, kid’s can be cruel.  It’s far from the only reason a child can have a bad body image, the media and parents also play roles.

The unfortunate truth is, children are being bombarded with negative feedback about themselves.  Why don’t we just let children stay children, watch what we say, and encourage them.  Children internalise most comments.  Remembering that someone they care about said them, and take them to heart.
