With the newest scare from the swine flu many people are wondering how to protect themselves. When you have kids in school, they are exposed to a lot of people, some of whom may be sick themselves.  The Center for Disease Control advises people to practice what they would normally in any environment where you may run across someone sick:

There are everyday actions people can take to stay healthy.
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.
If you get sick, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has a lot of information on the outbreak. They are also telling people to watch out for the average flu-like symptoms and the most effected age group is 20-50 year olds (For More Facts Click Here).

You may have heard that this is an untreatable (or at lease only by a few medications) strain, the simple reason for this is that the flu is the ‘norm’ for pigs, and it’s genetically different than the seasonal variety humans have.  You wouldn’t be able to use the same medications generally.  It is however treatable by a few medications.

Right now the stories about the Swine Flu seem to be everywhere, being reported on by everyone.  So far however, there doesn’t seem to be a huge reason to panic, simple protection (hand washing etc.) should be enough for you to protect your family and yourself.
