You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby: Browsing the Life Archive
The recently defunct Life Magazine’s collection of photos has been digitized and is online for free access through Google’s image search. They are available for prints, plus these are all fantastic images.
Just looking around stirred up amazement, things have changed so much. There were some photos, that just needed to be laughed about. Some of those are below, though they barely scratch the surface.

Children playing outside of a one-room country school (1940's)
Oh come on, admit it you are having a heart attack too from this photo.
This is a merry-go-round type toy from the 40’s. Something tell me that there is no way we would allow something like this today.

Children playing on old rocking chair in attic at home.(1960's)
To be perfectly honest, this type of thing is why my little brother (well, he’s 24 now) spent quite a few night in the emergency room when we were growing up.

Children playing with various flying toys (1950s)
Way back when, I wanted one of these toy rockets. Bad. To be honest, it wasn’t going to happen anytime soon (it’s still not going to be happening any time soon).

Baby sitting in baby carriage (1940s)
The look on this kiddo’s face is priceless. Granted, that kiddo isn’t a kiddo by far anymore.
This picture illustrates something my mother teases me about, my ‘what was old is evil’ theory. If any ’safety gear’ from my childhood were to be inspected, they would just burn it immediately.
There’s a lot more over there (last count was about ten million) you should check them out.

[...] is another find from the Life Photo Archive that was happily found (and written about the other day). The photo is just the sweetest thing, and just brings out a huge [...]
The top picture shows the only commercial piece of equipment we had at District 19 in Fullerton, Nebraska. We just called it “the swing” and it was marvelous fun when we used it as the Life picture shows. Unfortunately, it was also a torture tool. When we had a weak teacher who hid out in the schoolhouse during recess, the big, bad boys would tie us little ones onto it with a rope, and bang it repeatedly against the center pole until our heads were ringing and we were screaming. Bullying is not new, and a one-room country school was idyllic only when the teacher was strong and in control.

Beautiful photos, a reminder of simpler times when children were just children.
