An Angel on Earth
The Children’s Mercy neo-natal care wing has everything you would normally have in many hospitals, the cries of premature infants however are soothed by something all the technological advances and money can’t give or provide- love and a tender embrace by volunteer Grandma Lois.
Grandma Lois volunteers at Children’s Mercy’s comforting premature infants, some of whom have a variety of other medical conditions. All of which, she pays no mind to just rocking the babies and comforting their cries.
“When the parents come to me and they want me to watch their baby, to see that in their faces, that they know their baby is going to be taken care of — that’s the best part of the day,” Grandma Lois said.
The rest of the story can be found here.
Most weekdays Grandma Lois can be found rocking the babies and checking on the cries of other babies in the unit.
It takes a very special kind of person to work in these units, and it takes a special person to go everyday simply to comfort the babies. It can be very heartbreaking work, although it comes with it very own special rewards.
A year ago, amidst a budget crisis doctors, nurses, and other staff signed a petition to keep Grandma Lois no matter what. The only time she takes a vacation is two weeks around Christmas to spend some time with her own children and grandchildren.
