Mike Tyson’s Tragedy Highlights Safety Issues

Sadly, Mike Tyson lost his 4 year old daughter Exodus yesterday to the tragic accident with a cord on a treadmill.

An article on the accident tells us:

Sergeant Andy Hill of the Phoenix Police Department confirmed the little girl’s 7-year old brother found her unconscious on a treadmill inside their home, reports the Associated Press. Little Exodus had been strangled by a cord on the machine.

The article goes on to say:

Approximately 1000 children die each year of unintentional strangulation, 88 percent of them are under the age of 4-years-old, said the founder of Safety Matters, Larry Stone.

To lose a child, especially to such a preventable accident is a horrible tragedy for any family, it’s the worst fear of any parent.  This accident unfortunately, also brings the topic of this kind of accident into the spotlight.

Please, remember to keep any type of strangulation risk far far out of a child’s reach.

Around the House

  • Keep plastic shopping, garbage, and dry cleaning bags away from babies and children. Never use a plastic shipping bag or other plastic film as a mattress cover.
  • Choose a toy chest without a lid. If your child’s toy chest has a lid, make sure it has a safety latch that stays open in any position. And make sure there are holes in the back or bottom of the chest to allow air flow, in case your child gets stuck inside.
  • Lock your car – including the trunk – when it’s not in use. Keep the car keys away from children. Children have died after climbing into car trunks and becoming trapped. Always supervise children around cars.

My heartfelt sympathy to the Tyson family. It makes no difference is one is famous, monied, etc., when there is a tragedy like this. We are all people when it comes to things like this – an unspeakable loss – wish I could hug the family.

I use a treadmill everyday and this horrible accident has really opened my eyes. Work equipment needs to be kept locked up. I am very saddened by this tragic event and my heart is with their family.

I wholly confess, after I heard what had happened I went through everything with a fine toothed comb.

I feel so horrible for the family, I can’t imaging what they are going through.
