Natural Treatments for Some Common Child’s Ailments
Before the article a note: Please, before trying any of these check with your doctor! I’ve just had some luck with using a few of these on my child, but talk with your doctor to see if it’s appropriate for your child. You should check with them in case there is something more severe going on.
There are times as parents where our child is sick, be it late at night or while waiting for their medication to take effect. It’s rough, but there are some things you can do to lessen your child’s discomfort.
Coughing:
For a dry cough, a tablespoon of honey (ask your doctor for the okay and if it’s age appropriate) seems to help coat the throat.
For a ‘wet cough’ close the door to the bathroom and blast the shower on hot. Sit outside the tub (usually sit on the toilet with your child in your lap) and let the steam loosen up the phlegm.
Another thing I’ve used and do swear by is Vicks Baby Vapo-Rub on her feet, covered in either the footed pajamas or socks. I’ve found that the baby rub is water soluble so it washes off hands quickly and easily. The adult version is much oilier and harder to wash off. All you have to do is slather it on and cover it up. Although this remedy is usually considered an ‘old wives tale’ I’ve tried it on myself and I swear by it both for myself and my daughter.
A Stuffy Nose:
One of the most miserable symptoms of a cold is the stuffy nose. Based on the sheer annoyance factor alone.
For a stuffy nose there’s a massage technique that seems to really work you can find the easy to follow how-to here.
Pink eye:
Breast milk for pink eye. Breast milk have a ton of natural goodness in it, and if you happen to be a nursing mom with pink eye or with kids with pink eye tilt the head back and put a few drops into the eye. The linked source provided better instructions and some of the medical back up.
I recently found the last one and just had to share it.
Tummy Bugs:
Peppermint tea is said to help in relief of nausea. Make sure it’s not too hot, but warm and put it in a sippy cup. It should relieve some discomfort.
Now this list is far from comprehensive, but feel free to add in any favorite natural remedies below in the comments.
