Pediatricians: Board Certification to Protect Children?

Pediatricians: Board Certification to Protect Children?

The New York Times has on it’s website an absolutely heartbreaking essay.

It’s a look into the world of child abuse through the eyes of a pediatrician, who touches on his own story of coming across abuse in his own practice, and leads into the piece of a pediatrician board on the abuse.

The doctors looking to be certified will focus on the signs, from the obvious to the not so obvious signs of  a child being abused.  Many of the children are far too young to testify on their own behalf, so the pediatrician is the one who must do it for the child.

The new specialty focuses heavily on figuring out if something that looks suspicious could have another cause, such as burns.  It also teaches about the legitimate medical conditions whose symptoms commonly present themselves as looking like child abuse.
