The Sorta-Super Parent

stressed

Dave Barry has said (and it has become a favorite quote of mine) “Raising kids is easy, as long as that’s all you are doing”. Which while being brutally paraphrased by me, is still quite true.  It’s a bit like stacking blocks, add in too many and the whole thing becomes unstable.  Take any away from towards the bottom, it all comes crashing down.

There’s also the recent trend of the ‘Bad Parent’ who one could guess are trying to make others feel better about any perceived mistakes, just aren’t most parents.  Those things are great for a laugh, but I can’t see most parent’s confessing to most of those things, let alone on a public website with their names attached.

Most of us aren’t super people who can balance a checkbook, while balancing a baby on the hip. Most of us feel horrible about having to work, or staying home and getting nothing done.  No matter, there’s always something to feel bad about, or not ‘good enough’ about.  Comes with the territory of child rearing, one would think.  There’s always the thoughts that begin with ‘If I could just… then…’ which we all know won’t really help, but many parents still do.

So, what’s left?

Well, we’re all Sorta-Super in one aspect or another, maybe the rest of our lives may be crazy but there’s still that one thing you can manage.

For example- I can write while feeding a kiddo when I have to (sometimes).

Nothing huge, and maybe not that amazing but hey it’s something.  Maybe you are the patient one, or the one that can dissuade the sibling meltdown without kicking the kids out of the car.  Maybe you found a balance between dinner and childcare.  Or maybe you can deal fantastically (and maybe even look past it) with that one thing about your hubby/ kids/ family that drives everyone else nuts.  (My kiddo? Blows raspberries at quite funny, however confusing times.)

So, instead of focusing on all the things you’d like to change, try embracing your Sorta-Superness ™.

This is one of the reasons why a lot of moms choose to quit their jobs and become a full-time mom. It is easier to concentrate on your kids rather than juggle work and kids. If you are well-off, this is ok but if your husband’s income is not enough to sustain your everyday needs, sacrifices have to be made.
