3D Ultrasounds Under Fire

While they aren’t used much in a typical and uneventful (although, that use of term can be debatable), 3d ultrasounds give parents a glimpse at their child before they hold them. They’re in use in some small shops scattered around the country, and parents flock to them.

However, the practice is now coming under more fire than it did a few years back. Some doctors are questioning the safety of some untrained and medically unnecessary use of the ultrasound machine. However safe ultrasounds are, the overuse can be rarely problematic in the hands of an untrained technician.

One can purchase the franchise rights to open up one of the boutiques online, and in Connecticut they are on the verge of banning the medically unnecessary keepsake 3d ultrasound procedure.

“It’s a medical procedure. It comes with risk, there’s no question about that, and you shouldn’t be doing risky medical procedures unless its medically necessary,” said state Rep. Deborah Heinrich, D-Madison, who introduced the bill.

The federal Food and Drug Administration has also expressed concern about the practice, calling it an unapproved use of medical devices. The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine and the American College of Radiology have also taken disapproving stances.

The trend of getting one of the 3D keepsakes has grown in demand since the improvements in ultrasound technology has improved. While this is only in Connecticut right now, if the bill is passed here it has a good change of spreading.

These are medically unnecessary but should they be banning them?
