Predators on Parenting Websites?

It’s no secret that there are child predators online. Are they using parenting websites though to get to your children through you?

This article says, in no uncertain terms, that yes they are. It makes sense, one would guess from the logic of it. Many parents do use these websites, and many have posted and made virtual friends with the other posters. If the concern is even a part of what they are making it sound, then this is very troubling news.

You never do know for certain who you are chatting with online, you can feel as if you and your virtual buddy have known each other forever, but you never do know who is at the other screen.

They do post some good common-sense tips on online habits, that people should follow regardless.

1. Create a screen name that does not give away personal information. Your online name should consist of random letters and numbers and not your real name or the names of your kids. Do not give anyone an opportunity to use your personal information in your screen name to strike up a conversation.

2. Use a pseudo-identity. Use a fake name every time you set up an online account for any networking site, forum, blog, or wiki.

3. Never give an online stranger the opportunity to meet you or your children face-to-face. Like I say to the kids, it’s better to hurt someone’s feelings than put you or your family in harm’s way.

4. Report suspicious behavior. Just use common sense here. If you see something on a forum that looks suspicious or makes you uncomfortable, contact the webmaster immediately!

All fantastic tips, and things people should follow no matter what website you happen to be on.

Admittedly, I’m hoping that this is just another case of the media overreacting to nothing.  Even if they are however, people should be following the advice in the article.
