Summer Pool Safety Tips
Growing up we had a pool, although it has long since been taken down. Immediately after the installation of the pool, the gate around it was installed.
While it was up, my mother would constantly think up dire scenarios where a neighborhood child would fall in (even though my brother and myself were the only kids around within a mile). If one of us forgot to lock up the child proof safety lock? There was heck to pay, usually in the form of one of my moms patented ‘what ifs’ dire tales.
Although she didn’t force us to do mostly anything, we were both ‘forced’ to take and complete swimming lessons. That alone has been invaluable for both my brother and myself. Including me being on the swim team for a bit in school, and a lifeguard for a while too.
Although at the time I couldn’t appreciate it, my mother did manage to instill proper safety measures in both of us.
Something bad can happen in an instant, in mere seconds a child can get into the pool and be harmed or worse. With kids proper preventative measures are a must do especially around pools.
- Always remove ladders in above ground pools. Almost all pool ladders can be turned up, when not in use it’s a great habit to get into to fold it up and lock it into position.
- If it’s possible, install a gate with a child safety lock around the pool.
- Always be aware of where your children are and what they are doing.
- It goes without saying, but no running around pools!
- Always put floaties on small children, and keep them on.
- Swimming lessons (you can start as soon as three years old) are invaluable. If your kids are going to be near pools and water, these could save their lives.
