Surviving a Road Trip With Your Sanity In Tact

kid-in-carSummer’s here, so that usually means some traveling with the little ones. If your are anything like mine, they’re okay for a bit in the car usually content to play one of the litany of car games or something like that for a while.

Inevitably though, it happens- Boredom.  Well, boredom and just generally not wanting to be the the car anymore (though, can you really blame them?)  No games can soothe the savagery of child boredom, only some kind of special divine intervention.

Or not?

Let the burn off some of that extra energy.

It may help to find a rest stop, or somewhere to just let the kids run around for a bit.  Although, this might want to be a last resort, it can work out well.

Pack up some travel games and toys.

Toys that are great for the car are softer ones for tiny kids, but older kids may enjoy some of the travel games they have.  You can also let them pick out a special new travel friendly toy or video gave for a portable system (even with toddlers labeling something as ‘special’ works wonders).

Snacks

Hunger is a road trips worst enemy.  Hungry kids (and even some adults, me included) get cranky when they need something to eat.

Let them find the location

For kids that are a bit older let them trace the route on a map.  Then during the trip, encourage them to find your location.

Our kids like to play games in the car…especially the guessing games and the creative games that we played as kids.
On one 1,600 miles road trip we began creating games, then counting them up…and decided to create an iPhone app with instructions for >100< games families could play (no special equipment needed, beyond a few pencil and paper games for restaurant waiting). http://sites.google.com/site/familycargamesapp/
