The Girl Who Doesn’t Grow Up

It’s something most parents have said at least once, a wish that their sweet baby would never grow up.  Just to stay the little snuggly bundle of joy forever.  What if it was actually a reality?  Can you imaging your child never growing up physically or mentally past a few months?

Brooke Greenburg looks like a happy and healthy baby.  Maybe just around one year old, smiling and cute (that’s her in the photo above, third person from the left).

There is something however about Brooke that isn’t obvious.  Her age.

She’s 16 years old in that photo.

You read that right.  She’s 16 years old.

In an extremely rare genetic turn of fate, she never visually or mentally ages past a few months old.  Doctors say they’ve never seen anything like what Brooke has, ever.  ABC News has a full write up on Brooke’s story.

She’s mentally around 6 months old, and looks about the same.  Her behavior is a mix of a child around that age and her actual age of 16.  She cannot talk and must be fed through a feeding tube while in her swing.  She also attends a special education school.  Age wise she should be a junior in  high school.

But her parents are quick to point out that it doesn’t mean she doesn’t communicate.  She laughs, smiles, and is quick to let people know when something isn’t to her liking.

While most girls her age are thinking about the latest fashion, and fitting in- Brooke still wears some outfits from her own infancy.  While the doctors are baffled completely over why she never grows up, they also think there may be a change Brooke may be able to help humanity in it’s quest to not age, and live longer.

That’s right, she may be the living embodiment of the fountain of youth.

Her parents are hopeful that her life may have some larger purpose, hoping that because of Brooke humanity may be able to advance further.
