The Motherhood Pay Gap

A modern woman is expected it seems to be able to do it all.  It feels as if you have to be both June Cleaver, Martha Stewart, and a Betty Page clone all mixed up into one idea of perfection.  That alone is enough to drive anyone insane.  On top of it all, throw in a career and plenty of stress for good measure.

Recently coming into light is another roadblock to ‘being it all’, it’s the pay gap between Mothers and everybody else.

According to their research, mothers are less likely to be offered a job, and when they are offered the job, it is for $11,000 less, on average, than is offered to equal candidates without children.  Fathers, on the other hand, were offered $6,000 more.

The article quoted also has a heck of a lot of other ‘interesting’ facts about the pay difference.  Yet, just as the pay difference between men and women it’s questionable that anything will actually be done to assuage the problem.

Resumes of mothers were offered interviews only a third as often as nearly identical resumes of women without children.  There was no difference between fathers and childless men.

As the research shows, this gap has nothing to do with taking time off, lacking experience, or not having negotiating skills.

To say this is disheartening is an understatement.

The study was set up and run to test real world results between men, woman, and mothers.

When a Mom is expected to be it all, and do it all why are there still so many roadblocks even in this modern age?
