Keeping Safety Updated Through the Toddler Years

Last night while making dinner, my daughter decided that she wanted to ‘help’.  She started to open the oven while it was on.  Other than scaring the crap out of me, nothing thankfully other than that happened. She was never able to before, and honestly I didn’t think it would happen.

She showed me otherwise.  Thankfully with no injuries, and proving to momma that some of the safety measures need to be updated for a toddler.   I have and use religiously all the normal confines, gates, plugs, and all the other safety measures recommended.  Yet, most of those are in need of an upgrade for my (now) toddler.

It did get me thinking of other safety concerns that I just didn’t think of before.  While everyone knows about plugging up electric sockets with those plastic things, and keeping the medicine locked up and far out of a child reach there are some other things that not as many people think of (including myself).

While there is a lot of fabulous information around the internet, and they are full of absolutely fantastic advice, there’s still things that seem to be overlooked.

* If your child is anything like most, s/he is probably a bit of a climber (by bit, I do mean giving Spiderman a run for his money).  So, it’s not enough in the toddler years to simply put things out of reach, lock up everything that could pose a danger.  That means safety locks on the medicine, pots, pans, glassware, and anything else your child could get into.

*Tie down larger appliances, (the stove, fridge, washer drier, etc) or anything else a kid (even if they aren’t the Hulk) could even theoretically pull down on top of them.

*Gates, use them.  Even if they are a pain, they are invaluable.

Got any great safety advice?  Please share!
