It’s Complicated: Motherhood’s Taboo
There isn’t all that much talk about the darker end of the motherhood pool. There are areas you simply feel it isn’t socially acceptable of a place to go.
They are the social taboos of motherhood.
After all, you are supposed to at first complain about the lack of sleep, and perhaps even an eye roll over your husbands newborn-related faux pas, but any deeper you are stepping off into rather uncomfortable territory.
Why are they’re still so many parts of parenting that simply not socially acceptable? They remain shocking, and fodder for the media at large. While often times, it’s normal to miss the time before children, it’s not something that can be simply stated as that, there are usually a lot of sidesteps and clarifications necessary to so much as hint to the subject.
Moms aren’t supposed to feel that way, well admit to feeling that way at least. I think it’s one of the reasons some stories are so shocking, as in the story run in the last issue of Marie Claire, about moms who choose to leave their families.
Men do it every day, leaving families and wives in search of another life. It’s so common people hardly blink at the thought anymore. Yet the women in the article receive so much scorn, mom’s just aren’t supposed to leave their kids. A mom simply isn’t supposed to think about that kind of thing.
Yet often times, it’s not something someone would ever actually do. It’s normal to think about a few moments of quiet, or dare I go there, favor one child over another. Yet to say any of these things to another person is akin to admitting to being a horrible individual.
While women have come so far in the last decade, one must realize that at times you cannot separate the individual from her status of Mom. A woman isn’t just a mom, who’s life magically loses it’s autonomy after having children. Maybe it’s finally time to open up about our feelings, both good and bad. Maybe there can be some kind of understanding between the two sides of womanhood and motherhood.
