Coping With A Long Absence Of A Parent

Explaining a long absence of one parent for any reason can be a difficult thing, both coping yourself and helping your child cope can be just as hard- if not harder to do. From business trips to military deployments, having a parent away for a time can be hard. While it may still be difficult still, small things can make a big difference in both you and your child’s mood.

Stay busy.

Having an active routine can help keep your mind occupied.  When your mind is occupied and you aren’t focused on missing your partner it can help time fly quicker.  Both you and your child can benefit from doing fun things that you both enjoy, even simple things like coloring or exercising can help lift a gloomy mood.

Try to stay happy.

Children tend to feed off a parent’s mood.  If you are feeling down about the absence, your child may sense that something is wrong and may act out.  However, if you are happy your child may cope better.  While it may be hard to be ‘happy’ about a partner’s absence, try and find joy in the little everyday things.  Eventually, it may become easier.

Get Connected.

Getting active in your community or with other families going through (or that have gone through) something similar may help.  Realized that you aren’t alone in the situation and having someone who really understand the situation can help out both you and your child.

If you have any advice on how to handle a parent’s absence during a deployment or business trip, please feel free to post it up below!
