Is Pink Bad For Girls?
The Holiday season is upon us, and that leads to a large influx of advertising and marketing materials of retailers trying to get your gifting dollars. This year has also led to some debates as well. While one company (Toys ‘R US) has already hit a bevy of angry consumers, another is facing a protest.
While the general outrage isn’t only over pink and stereotyping, it’s actually a lot broader than that- many are concerned over both genders and the way they are looked at. If you were to walk into most kid’s bedrooms today, it may not be entirely apparent over which gender they are. It’s (mostly) perfectly acceptable that a girl may play with a car set, and a boy may want to play chef.
Yet advertisements still use many of the ‘long ago’ gender stereotypes, and many parents are expressing a lot of outrage. Browsing through almost any toy catalogue will show girls in frilly pink daintily playing with dolls. Boys seem to be all active and playing rambunctiously with trucks.
What do you think is the reason behind this kind of advertising? Should it stop and get with the times?
