The Dispute Over Toxicity of Zhu Zhu Pets

It seems that not everyone is in agreement over the allowed levels of chemicals in Zhu Zhu pets.  While we did post on the levels being dangerously high it seems that that the report may have been in error, at least according to some sources.

Apparently, GoodGuide.com was using questionable methods to test the toys.

For its part, GoodGuide began backtracking Monday afternoon, releasing a statement that clarified its testing methods and apologized for comparing its findings to federal standards.

While the commenter in the previous article was correct, it does seem that the toys may in fact be safer than thought.  The website’s own admission had caused a firestorm of debate.  While it is true that many of the toys that parents buy may indeed cause some concern, Zhu Zhu pets seem to be off the ‘chopping block’ for the time being.

According to GoodGuide themselves:

"Since issuing our release, we have learned that the testing methodology used in the federal standards (a soluble method) is different than the methodology we used in our testing (a surface-based method)," the San Francisco group said. "Accordingly, while we accurately reported the chemical levels in the toys that we measured using our testing method, we should not have compared our results to federal standards. We regret this error."
