Are Kids the Secret to a Company’s Success?

While marketing to children is looked down upon, some companies are looking ways to get kids talking.  Social media, and today’s tech savvy youngsters are a key component to a products success.  While not strictly verboten, marketing towards kids isn’t exactly smiled upon.

In looking at various successful (and at times completely questionable) products, the key to marketing right now is to ‘get people talking’.  This avenue has become so popular that whole agencies are popping up now specifically to market towards kids using social media.

Is this another case of ‘just because it’s not illegal, doesn’t make it right’ or just the new media forms growing around the most promising user base?

At times, a products popularity is due to how ridiculous that product is.  For an example, the Snuggy (the blanket with sleeves!) boomed in popularity and went viral online due to the concept being borderline absurd.

While the secret to the Snuggy’s success may be the fact that it’s a bit silly, there are many other products (that aren’t as odd) that have grown successful due to similar new media marketing.  At the same time, for every successful campaign there are even more that fizzled out or never took off.

It’s all about the company’s approach, as the same people that can create chatter about a product can also break a campaign before it ever takes off.  Kids that are growing up today are becoming rather savvy fairly quickly to marketers and their claims.  This is a good thing, and it has the ability to level the playing field so to speak.

To help your child become a better consumer in the future- talk to them.  See what they already know and build on it.  Regardless of feeling about marketers taking this approach, it is the reality for the foreseeable future, and it’s important to make sure that kids understand how it all works.
