New Kids Jewelry Makes Lead Look Positively Delicious
Chinese made kid’s jewlery has been barred from containing lead, in a move to protect kids from injesting the dangerous chemical. In a more than confusing and infuriating move, the producers of the jewewlery are now using cadmium, and even more dangerous material.
This came out due to an Associated Press report, which can be read here.
This is rediculous, and really- while the pressing of cheap materials to keep prices (and wages) low is a large one- using extremely toxic materials seems to be a bit a bit more horrible than raising prices.
This isn’t even a small and insignificant amount either:
The most contaminated piece analyzed in lab testing performed for the AP contained a startling 91 percent cadmium by weight. The cadmium content of other contaminated trinkets, all purchased at national and regional chains or franchises, tested at 89 percent, 86 percent and 84 percent by weight. The testing also showed that some items easily shed the heavy metal, raising additional concerns about the levels of exposure to children.

This is frightening, and far beyond the pale. It’s a turn for the worse, when the inteded effect of the lead ban was to make things safer. It’s disturbing, and yet people still buy these kinds of things, and it seems that they will remain a danger no matter how many bans are put in place.
