Administration Wants To Revise No Child Left Behind

President Bush signing the No Child Left Behin...

The Bush administration’s No Child Left Behind act had many pitfalls and the Obama administration is looking to revise the bill.  There is some hope that it will indeed be an improvement.  While the ideas behind the bill, of closing the learning gap between students, will remain- they are looking to improve the way it is all handled.

The administration is in talks right now over the changes and it looks like they will be getting rid of a few of the things the teachers themselves found objectionable.  While there is no way of knowing presently, there is still hope for it being the benefit it was intended to be.

Significantly, said those who have been briefed, the White House wants to change federal financing formulas so that a portion of the money is awarded based on academic progress, rather than by formulas that apportion money to districts according to their numbers of students, especially poor students. The well-worn formulas for distributing tens of billions of dollars in federal aid have, for decades, been a mainstay of the annual budgeting process in the nation’s 14,000 school districts.

One of the main points in the Act that many took issues with was the lopsided funding.  Many of the schools who were most in need of funding were in turn punished by No Child Left Behind.  No matter how noble the intention was behind it, it still has many pitfalls.  It seems to actually reverse it’s own intention.

However, many are still concerned that the changes won’t be enough, or that they may come too late.
