Latest: Grandma and Grandpa May Be to Blame for Childhood Obesity?
It’s something that is shown on televisions and cards all the time, a loving grandmother baking cookies with her grandchildren, but according to some researchers that may be more nefarious than those sweet things may have you believe.
In a study published in The International Journal of Obesity (and reported on by the New York Times:
What the data shows is that children who are cared for by their grandparents part time have a 15 percent greater risk of being overweight than children who are cared for only by a parent. When children are in the full-time care of their grandparents, the increased risk of obesity is 34 percent.
Why? The authors theorize the obvious — that grandparents are more likely to be indulgent because that’s one of the joys of being grandparents.

But, is this all just another scapegoat for childhood obesity? After all, haven’t children been spoiled rotten by their grandparents forever? Perhaps there is a true culprit behind the childhood obesity epidemic, but it’s doubtful it Grandma or Grandpa.
