Warning Signs of Potential Daycare Pitfalls

We all want to make sure that our children are cared for as well as possible, and while we cannot be there 24/ 7 you can still watch out for some warning signs for the time when you may have to go back to work and put your child in a daycare.

Too Strict/ Not Strict Enough: Discipline is important, but overdoing it or being to loose with rules is no way to go either. This may not seem to big of a deal, but when it comes time to bring your child home, there may be more problems that would come from these extremes.

Iffy Reputation: Talk and listen to what other parents are saying, depending on the similarity of circumstances- you may face the same issues.  While this shouldn’t be the only thing your decision is based off of, it could definitely give you some food for thought.

Issues with the daily curriculum: Daycares, just like early schooling provides structure and a daily list of things to do.  If a daycare has no curriculum?  Keep walking that is a huge red flag- it won’t provide the necessary structure that children need.  However, thinking about your child’s personality- if the daily curriculum seems to rigid or too loose- it may pose a problem.  Also pay attentions to the holidays celebrated to see if it may conflict with your family (including days off for the holidays as well).

Understaffed: Look into the mandatory staff to child ratio in your state- use that as a guideline.  Some daycares staff more than others, even by the state guidelines.  If the staff seems upset, overworked or stressed it may be a sign of being understaffed, although taking other things into consideration- it may just be a personal problem (the staff are human after all).

Cleanliness: Is the daycare facility clean?

Attentiveness: Listen while you are there- if a child is asking a question, how attentive is the staff?
