More Than A Fashionable Diagnosis: When Something Isn’t Quite Right

A lot of time and talk has been given to the over diagnosis of children with medical and mental issues. Some have gone so far as to call a lot of these diagnosis the ‘fashionable’ ones to have. They range from ADHD to Autism Spectrum disorders.
When however, there is something wrong it can lead to many questions, too few answers and a lot of problems beyond what may be ailing your child. It can be stressful, especially when it feels like there is nowhere to turn.
No parent wants to wonder and worry that something may be wrong with their child, but unfortunately sometimes things just aren’t quite right, and there may be a growing suspicion to a parent that sometimes they just can’t put their finger on. It may be just ‘odd’ behavior noticed, or maybe some speaking issues, regardless- you know something simply isn’t correct.
The best thing to do in those situations is talk to your pediatrician. Don’t worry that he will think you are over reacting, most pediatricians are both use to worried parents and know what to look for when there’s more to something than worry. However, if your child’s pediatrician isn’t listening to your concern, don’t be afraid of getting a second opinion. Either talking to a child psychiatrist in your area, or another pediatrician.
While it may indeed be nothing to worry about, if something is wrong early intervention is the key. More and more studies are being done that show that the earlier something is found, the more chance your child has of leading a normal and happy life.
There shouldn’t be shame involved if something is out of place, most mental diagnosis are something that has become more and more public. While it is true that a few years back, problems were shoved aside, and nary a word was spoken about them- those days thankfully are gone.
Consider joining a support group either locally or online, just talking to those who have ‘been there’ can help out tremendously.
