TASER To Develop Sexting Prevention: Basically A Virtual Tattle Tale
The company normally associated with things the police and military use, are in the process of developing a way to help parents prevent their kids from sexting- the name of which is- the PROTECTOR. It is said to be something that can be remotely operated by a parent, and while it sounds rather 1984 the company claims that it still will protect your child’s privacy.
Presently the Protector only works on a modern Smartphone (so, if your child doesn’t have an iPhone or Blackberry- this can’t be used). It’s going to cost anywhere from $9.95 to around $30.00.
Considering that recent studies put the percentage of teens that ‘sext’ to around 40% it stands to reason that are at more than a handful of parents will be using this. While many are already creeped out by the mere thought of this, even if it’s in the sake of concern.
Things like the below on their FAQ really doesn’t help:
Q. What are ‘auto-warnings’?
With older teens, you may feel it appropriate to give feedback directly to an infringing party without your direct involvement. When the ‘Auto-Warnings’ feature is enabled, if PROTECTOR detects potentially harmful behavior, the sending party will receive a notice alerting them to the fact that if the behavior continues, the guardian will be alerted. This feature helps safeguard your child while protecting their privacy. In the event that this behavior continues, you will be notified so that you can deal with it as a parent.
