Your Choices: Be a Good Parent or Dish Out $2,500

While it almost sounds like a good idea, upon further inspection a measure that has been introduced by a Pennsylvania lawmaker is anything but. The bill, introduced by State Senator Anthony (D. Philadelphia) could (if passed) fine bad parenting up to $2,500 in fines for their wayward children.
Supporters say that the bill would force parents to think about what they are doing more. While those against the bill have been wondering who exactly would be those who are deciding what exactly defines ‘bad parenting’.
Those same people who are opposed to the measure are also pointing out that the same bill would punish single parents worse, many of whom have to work throughout the time they would be with their children.
From the Philadelphia Inquirer:
Williams, who is running for governor, insists that parents who have tried to teach their offspring to comply with the law would not be targeted. In other words, parents could get an A for effort, even if their child is a bad seed?
Further, there is little evidence to suggest that the legislation would encourage bad parents to do a better job. There are already laws on the books that could be used to fine parents of children convicted of injuring others.
Is this proposed bill just a silly waste of time? Or something that makes sense to you?
