Keep Your House Fire-Safe This Holiday Season

Screen shot 2010-11-28 at 5.05.58 AMAbout five years ago, a tragedy struck a family over Christmas as their house went ablaze. The cause was attributed to faulty wiring of the Christmas lights. And since you might be putting up Christmas decorations in your house at this time, it’s better to take note of these precautions to keep your family and your kids especially safe.

1) Never let your kids play with matches or lighters. They might carelessly light this one where there’s clothes and items that will easily spread the fire. Worse, they will injure themselves and this isn’t something that’s easy to fix or cure with medicines. Let your kids be aware that they must not play with matches or lighters, too.

2) Install smoke detectors. If you already have them, ensure that they are working best. Replace batteries if needed.

3) If someone in the family is a smoker, with all the decorations present inside the house, and a fresh tree that would literally burn up, tell your smoker to do this outside of the house instead. Or better yet, encourage them to stop smoking, now may be a good time. Make sure that there are ashtrays nearby too, as even smoking outside may be dangerous. They can’t just throw their cigarette butts anywhere.

4) Holiday decorations, like all the light fixtures, must be turned off when the family goes to bed. Never leave these on overnight. You have to unplug these. If you have a live Christmas tree, water them regularly so that it doesn’t dry up and burn when the lights are too hot.

5) Have a fire extinguisher in the house.
