Thanksgiving Preparations With Your Kids

Screen shot 2010-11-22 at 8.10.07 AMGetting the children involved with Thanksgiving is one way of teaching them why this holiday is celebrated and what’s the importance of it in American tradition. You can make this a fun learning experience when you assign tasks and chores for them to do.

For example, you can assign your kids to do minor Thanksgiving decorations, like maybe prepare something for the place settings. A friend of mine lets her kids get busy with the crayons and draws turkey images they make use as table decors or create lovely place mats out of it, or trimmings which we can hang on walls. This also unleashes their creativity at coming up with colorful artwork.

At the kitchen, I invite my kids to help prepare for dishes that are simple to do, like mixing a bowl yams, or special sauces. I also sometimes ask them to help me with the stuffing. It can be pretty messy in the kitchen when they are around, but I think it teaches them to appreciate the holiday even more.

During the party itself, the older kids perform a little number, for entertainment and preparations have to be made ahead of time for that too. What the little kids do when their elder siblings are busy rehearsing their special numbers, I ask them to help me prepare the snacks for the rest of the kids.

I also make it a point to make Thanksgiving hats with the children, making use of newspaper, some glitters and colors. They wear this at dinnertime for fun.
