Keeping Fit as a Family

Screen shot 2011-01-03 at 12.50.28 PMWith the holidays and the festivities over, everyone’s goal is to lose all that holiday weight and get back into shape. For adults, this is important and necessary as overindulgence and gaining weight may affect the health and lifestyle. Many will want to get on board a good exercise and fitness program. Parents, however, may not realize it but even kids need to get into the same program, as well. So why not make this fitness goal into a family affair instead?

While we don’t usually think kids and exercise go together, today’s lifestyle among children have changed, so much so that the obesity rate has gone up and continues to go up. Spending the lazy winter and eating so much rich food and sweets during the holidays actually compounds the problem. It is definitely high time children are also made aware of the benefits of a good physical regimen.

If you are going to attend fitness classes after the holidays, perhaps it’s also a good idea to ask if there are any fitness programs you can do with your kids. It doesn’t necessarily have to be an actual aerobics class, your child and you can do dance classes. Not only is this beneficial to the health or encourages your child to take serious care of his or her body actively, doing this together with your child can be loads of fun.

If your child shows enthusiasm for it, you can push this further and do physical activities together at home, such as involving each other in a game of basketball or badminton during Saturday afternoons. You can also involve other kids in the neighborhood and make this a regular thing. When you do this, you are also helping the children realize the importance of not being engrossed in video games for periods of time, as kids are so accustomed to these days.

Aside from physical fitness, keeping and maintaining a good diet as a family is also one way of letting kids realize that a healthy body is important even at such a young age. If you are trying to diet or cut down on certain food, you can involve your kids with this and in the process, teach them what foods are good to eat than others.
