Teacher Lee Beats President Obama’s Preschool Initiative by Four Years
San Diego, CA, February 14, 2013 –(PR.com)– Talking about quality universal preschool education, President Obama noted studies that show the earlier a child begins to learn, the better they perform throughout the rest of their lives. A San Diego organization, Teacher Lee Play-to-Learn, has been offering a free mobile preschool program for four years and reaching many of the 49 percent of San Diego county children who can’t afford to attend conventional preschools.
The program brings parents and children together in an interactive educational experience that teaches them to transform every moment of every day into a learning opportunity. “Today, fewer than three in ten 4-year-olds are enrolled in a high-quality preschool program,” said Obama. “Most middle-class parents can’t afford a few hundred bucks a week for private preschool. And for poor kids who need help the most, this lack of access to preschool education can shadow them for the rest of their lives.”
The success of the Teacher Lee program lies in its dedication to encouraging free play and experimentation instead of relying on more traditional teacher-guided classes. Additionally, Teacher Lee shows parents how to turn play time into learning using techniques they can use in their own home.”
“We teach parents how to bring an outstanding preschool education into their own home,” says Teacher Lee. “I teach parents the fundamentals of developmental learning and the countless ways they can incorporate them in fun ways into the everyday lives of their children.” Parents are required to attend the sessions with their children since they are an integral part of the Teacher Lee construct. The parents rotate with their children through nine different stations learning how to turn play time into learning. “Through books, imaginative play, cars, painting, puppets, puzzles, play-dough, construction toys and art, children develop the skills they‚ll need to be successful in kindergarten. These skills include: letter, number and color recognition; fine and gross motor coordination; spatial awareness; and social skills. All of which set them up for success not just in kindergarten, but for the rest of their lives,” said Leon Lazarus, Teacher Lee’s husband and partner in Teacher Lee Play-to-Learn. There’s a short- and long-term impact to what Teacher Lee offers. According to the Committee for Economic Development, “high-quality preschool programs offer societal benefits that far outweigh program costs by improving later education, employment, earnings, and crime outcomes for students who attend preschool.” The Alliance for Quality Education provided statistics that show children who have attended preschool have a 29% better chance of getting into college.
