Researchers using scanning technology say they discovered physical differences in the brains of older children with autism compared to those of kids without autism.

“We could discriminate between typically developing and autistic children with 92 percent accuracy,” based on the volume of gray matter in one part of the brain, Lucina Uddin, first author of a new study and instructor in psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine, said in a university news release.

However, there are some limitations to the study. The researchers only looked at kids aged 8 to 18, and they didn’t capture images of the children’s brains before they were diagnosed with autism. And the findings don’t appear to have an immediate effect on how children with autism are diagnosed or treated.

The study authors reached their findings after comparing MRI scans of the brains of 24 children with autism with those of 24 children the same age who had developed normally.

The investigators found that the children with the disorder who had the most difficulty communicating with others had the biggest differences in the structures of their brains compared to other kids.

In the United States, about one in 110 children has autism, a developmental disorder that interferes with language skills, social interactions and self-awareness. The traditional method of diagnosing an autism spectrum disorder is through observation and a variety of tests.

Commenting on the findings, Dr. Andrew Adesman, chief of developmental and behavioral pediatrics at the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York, said that the study doesn’t affect diagnosis or treatment of autism. Still, it marks a step toward understanding how autism develops, he added.

“What might be helpful, in theory, is that if a child is born as a sibling in a family with an increased risk for autism . . . to know in advance if that person is indeed going to have autism,” said Adesman. “Maybe one could intervene sooner,” he noted.

The study appears in the Sept. 2 online edition of the journal Biological Psychiatry. (HealthDay News)

Children are lovable, but caring for their clothing could be a headache once they get discolored. To eradicate these stains, you should read the tag, presoak in cool water, be aware of several approaches for numerous stains and rinse out completely at the end.

Taking care of your little bundle of joy could get tiresome. Cleaning up after a toddler could get messy and complicated. Know how to rinse and eliminate stains from your child’s garments the proper way.

Look at the label

Instructions should be followed to the letter. We carry out this regularly when we are doing our own laundry, especially for outfits which are more expensive. Washing clothing for babies should not be any different, particularly if you’d want to protect the quality of cool baby clothes. The label should offer enough details that you should follow so that you can keep the optimum quality of the clothing. Examples of details that you could acquire from the tag includes laundering temperature, whether whitening is suitable for the product, if the material could be ironed or if the product only demands hand washing.

Presoak in cold water

Little ones often throw stuff around and are dirty eaters. It’s not unusual for a flummoxed mom and dad to have a grubby, food-splattered baby at the end of every dinner. Correct strategies must be employed in order to efficiently remove these stains from your baby’s clothing. Before you try to wash stains off clothing, it is a wise decision to presoak the dress in cold water to remove as much dust as possible. It’s important that you dip the apparel as soon as they get discolored because stubborn stains are hard to remove once they’re allowed sufficient time to set in.

Learn the different techniques for several stains

There are different methods that you need to employ to eliminate a variety of stains. Various stains need an organic solvent to be taken away, and some elements require mild detergents. You could use a soft bristled nylon brush to gently wash some cleaning agent on the affected area too. The following are tips for a number of stains:

• Protein spills

You will need a chemical detergent to eliminate the stain. If the stain remains, use some enzyme stain cleaner prior to laundering the clothing as usual.

• Vegetables and fruit

Fruit and vegetable stains must appear quickly after soaking in water. If this does not function, utilize an enzyme stain remover and launder as usual after a few minutes.

• Petrol as well as sauces

Talcum powder or corn starch should be quickly put on the area. You can clean any remains off eventually and your baby’s clothes must be free from stains of grease and oil such as those from ointments and baby oils.

• Leaky nappies

In case soaking doesn’t take away these stains, you need to apply one tablespoon of ammonia diluted in a single cup of water directly to the stain. Keep for some time before laundering as usual. Be aware not to use this on cloth diapers or clothing which will come in immediate contact with skin.

Rinse out thoroughly

Your child’s skin is very delicate and attention should be paid not just to the kind of cleaning agent you utilize but also in making sure the clothing is completely free of any residual traces of cleaning agent. Rinse your child’s clothes carefully under flowing water to remove all remnants of cleaning soap and also other sediments.

Teaching your little ones to brush their teeth is a challenge. Sometimes they would love the idea to brush their teeth because of the scary tooth story you just shared to them. But the real challenge is how to motivate your child to brush her teeth even without the scolding part.

Brushing can be fun if we put our creative side in it. The following suggestions worked for other children I know.

1. Buy colorful toothbrush and cup- preferable something that your child chose for himself. Sometimes they get motivated on this because it’s “their” stuff and they love it.

2. Prepare prizes. This will not be an everyday process. But give your child a little boost by giving a prize once a month. Tell him that he did a good job in cleaning his teeth, and that he deserves a goody bag!

3. Brush together. It’s much more fun to brush teeth with someone. With this, you can actually teach your kid the proper way of brushing his teeth. Do the up down process and avoid getting mad during the process if he doesn’t do it your way. Give him time to adjust.

4. Visit the dentist regularly but do this in a fun way. Treat him somewhere after doing this. Let him enjoy his dentist day. Never make the dentist as the horror teeth doctor. You have to make it to a point that your kid, will love his dentist, because he’s the one who’s taking good care of his precious teeth.

Baby fevers are wicked and warm weathers also trigger this among small children. The heat can lead to sweating that will lead to cough and colds which may develop into a full blown fever. It’s hard for parents to watch their babies suffer. Fortunately there are a lot of things you can do to ease the discomfort. And these aren’t tricks that doctors will tell you.

When you baby has a fever, bear in mind to never do this:

1. Alcohol Rub. While it’s proven to work with adults, some babies may develop reactions from it. Some folks make use of alcohol for sponge bath as it supposedly helps lower the body’s temperature. However, as the skin cools down, the baby can shiver and tremble. And this can only lead to something bad so avoid it.

2. Head Compress. A cloth that’s soaked in water and then compressed on the babies head or shoulder may give relief. Some parents may think it’s helpful to do a headwrap. But remember that babies are still very young and their body is delicate. You could hurt your baby this way.

3. Less Clothes. Most adults usually bundle up their baby when they have fever, but there is a tendency to over bundle and this will not help the baby become comfortable or lose his fever. Dress them in single cotton clothes instead. And keep the air fresh by using a dehumidifier. If bundled up, and if the room doesn’t have proper circulation, the baby tends to overheat.

Remember these simple tips the next time you’re taking care of a sick baby.
