It’s no secret that babies are expensive. With diapers, wipes, clothes, formula, food, and all those toys that they are far too young to appreciate, it seems that baby expenses never end. But there is something that parents can do to save a little bit of money – making their own baby food. When a baby reaches about six months, it’s time to start introducing them to all the good stuff they will eat as an adult. Vegetables, fruits, meats, and even the occasional dessert come into the baby’s menu at this time. But one doesn’t need to spend a fortune buying the cute little one-serving jars. Especially when it’s so easy to make your own and it doesn’t take much time either.

To make your own vegetables for dear baby, simply peel if necessary and boil them just as you would if you were preparing them for an adult. You can also steam them or bake them. Just make sure that however you are preparing them, you don’t use too much oil as these are just calories that baby doesn’t need. When they are prepared to the point of being very soft, simply place them in a food processor or blender and mix until you have a delicious puree ready for baby’s tummy. Fruits can be prepared the same way, but these should really just be boiled. If necessary, you can add some water to the puree but fruits and vegetables rarely need this.

Meats are prepared in the same way. Broil, bake, boil, or steam the meat and then place in the appliance of choice to create a puree. Due to the lack of moisture in cooked meat, you will probably need to add a little bit of water to make a meat puree.

Once the food is prepared, you can place it in single-serve food storage dishes and put them in the freezer. They will be good there for six months. This means that you can spend one weekend making baby food and have enough in the freezer until your baby is no longer eating purees.

One of the frustrations I’ve come across as a first time parent some million years ago was in potty training my son at about 2 1/2 years old. As with most parents, I tried doing every trick in the book. The first few weeks of it were really challenging to the point that my husband and I almost gave up, resigned to the fact that our baby was going to be in diapers forever. But eventually, our baby was able to get the hang of it. As with many things to learn in life, kids mature and do their things at their own pace.

However, there are some things you can do to make the transition stage and learning process more tolerable. With potty training, here are some tricks my friends shared that they say, worked like a charm:

1. Giving incentives. One friend tried to reward the child with chocolates, another with toys, when their toddler makes use of the potty with little fuss or much success. Rewards are positive reinforcements that suggests to the child that if they keep doing this, something good comes out from doing it right.

2. Avoid getting mad. Many parents may have had episodes of this — finding your child’s underwear with stain or poo in it. Reacting by getting angry only inhibits the child’s eagerness to learn to use the potty. There are some things that aren’t worth getting angry over. This one is one of it.

3. Schedule potty breaks to the letter. This way, your child sets a routine and will immediately follow through this routine with ease. A special routine, one that’s done before sleeping, will help your child learn to avoid peeing on his or her bed while sleeping at night.

Do you have any tips to successful potty training?

I raised our son using a drop side crib and meant no untoward incident with it. It’s actually a pretty convenient invention since you can put down one side of the crib and reach out to your baby without straining your back, stomach or muscle.

Some decades after it has been invented and this product has been banned. There have been reports of babies hurting themselves on the crib because of faulty manufacturing. Some of these cribs are incorrectly assembled creating gaps that trap the baby. So, manufacturers are now required by law to phase out drop side cribs from their line-up.

What’s the safest crib to use these days then? Of course, the first rule of thumb is choose a crib that’s not constructed with a drop side (in case you still spot one at the store).

I particularly love this set from Sorelle Tuscany Convertible Crib:

It is particularly higher, which makes bending down not that inconvenient to do. The crib is made of beautiful birch wood in cherry and it comes with a side table for changing diapers as well as storage areas for the baby’s items. This saves a lot of space in the room.

Here’s another beautiful crib from Da Vinci. It’s the Kalani Convertible Baby Crib:

Similar to the other crib above, the mattress area is four layers and is elevated so that mothers do not have to bend over too much. As the baby grows, you can remove the layers so that it’s made safer for her.

Both these cribs are available at Amazon.
