Madonna’s bid to adopt little one Mercy James has been rejected, and the star is said to be appealing in Malawi’s Supreme Court. The singer and her children are said to be be understandably devastated by the decision. Also devastated is the child herself, Mercy after spending time with the famous family.

Mercy’s (alleged) father came forward claiming that he didn’t know she was alive, and had thought she died in childbirth along with her mother. He says he will take a DNA test to prove his paternity.  

Madonna’s elder son, David is also from Malawi (he was adopted in 2006).

Unfortunately, the adoption of Mercy James has sparked another debate over the adoption of children from abroad.  The opinions are countless, and as MSNBC put it:

Adoption experts continued to spar over whether Madonna should be attempting to adopt a second child from Malawi, with one charity spokesman saying she should support the community instead of trying to adopt a child with a parent still living.

I admit, I’m lost at that last sentence.  Ignore for a moment, that it’s Madonna being written about. Most adoptions even in western countries have parents, usually both, still alive.  It’s a fact of the matter that, the child isn’t always placed for adoption due to a tragedy such as a parent’s death.  Usually, a child is placed up for adoption due to the parents circumstances.

The other tenant of the debate spectrum is: Should people adopt from foreign countries when there are so many children here?

This is a much more personal stance, but far away from the glitz and glam of Hollywood this happens all the time.  There are prospective parents looking to countries afar to complete their families.  China, Africa, and many other countries are list of places to adopt from.  The children from these countries, when adopted, tend to face an actual chance at leading a good life.  Where, in their home countries they may not have the same.

A child disearves a good life, and a loving family.  No matter where they were born.

There is also the matter of understanding that some babies may not necessarily need to talk to get attention. Crying or laughing babies already pertain to something. Emotions can do a lot in helping us determine what babies want and don’t like. While some may not notice it, you will be surprised at the things you can get out of babies once you really observe and study their every move.
