The news hit yesterday of a large earthquake in Haiti. There have been many displaced and killed so far, and any form of rebuilding effort cannot feasibly start until the area is safer.

While looking for a way to help, please be careful to make sure that anything you do give will indeed go to someone in need of the helping hand. There are already scammers looking to make some quick money using this tragedy.

Here is an ABCNews link on ways you can help. It includes information on the Red Cross and how to assure your donation will go to Haitians, among other ways to help those effected by the earthquakes.

While there is no cure for autism, early intervention programs have been showing a lot of promise. Studies that are being conducted point to there being ways to help rewire children’s brains in a way that can give some relief from Autism’s grip.

According to Science Daily:

A novel early intervention program for very young children with autism — some as young as 18 months — is effective for improving IQ, language ability and social interaction, a comprehensive new study has found.

(Source)

The studies show what many had suspected, the earlier therapy starts the better.

The studies are starting to show that there is more hope than once thought for both parents and children effected by autism. These early intervention programs, while not a ‘cure’ do give hope to many people.

Starting early, while a child’s brain is still developing seems to be a primary key to the therapeutic benefits. The reason being that the therapy may actually help to ‘rewire’ the brain during these times.

Sometimes kids need some extra help in school, and having a personal tutor is one of the best ways to help a child catch up, and create a lasting good studying habit. Tutors can help in a wide variety of ways and while some people may have trouble accessing them, a teacher has come up with a way to utilize the internet for helping children progress through their tougher courses.

She says:

‘Several of my students who really needed extra help were not able to stay after school because of transportation issues,’ says Chandra, science teacher, and now entrepreneur. ‘I knew that I didn’t want that to hinder them from getting the help that they needed. I made weekly home visits for a while, but the reality was, I could not make visits for all of my students who were unable to receive extra help outside of class.’

So, she created Advantage Learning Tutorials, LLC, an online tutoring service also known as ‘ALT.’

The idea is a fabulous one, due to the wide reaching access of the internet. This is also a fabulous resource for those who may have trouble finding a tutor in normal life.

The website can be found at: www.altlcassroom.com

According to the book’s author’s:

For many years, friends and colleagues urged and Nicole to publish these tips in a book for parents. In September 2008, they decided to go one-step further by launching a new parenting website called Sixty Second Parent (www.sixtysecondparent.com). The dynamic and innovative site provides avenues for bringing together many experts in the field of child health and development, where they share their knowledge and connect with parents through online forums. The success of the website has fuelled Olson and Nicole’s passion for making a positive difference to the lives of parents and has lead to the development of the first book in a series, called The Triumphant Child (www.thetriumphantchild.com).

While China has admitted its fault and has even gone as far as offering a helping hand to countries affected by its irresponsible quality control management on exported goods, no one can really tell these days which baby formula is really safe for babies. You can just get a glimpse of the thousands of babies that are suffering right now in China. It is really a sight you don’t want to see happening to your baby.

The word out today is that we may even see most milk products, not necessarily from China, be pulled out for local testing for possible strains of melamine. The milk scare has gone as far as reaching major dairy products that we all consume and with that in mind, the prospect of encountering a milk shortage looms upon us.

For adults, there are alternatives such as turning to local milk products that do not outsource some ingredients for their products. But for babies, it all points to the natural way of feeding that we all know as breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding is encouraged especially for newborn babies. It is the healthy way to keep your child healthy and ensure their overall health. I just found it funny that in China, most parents rely on baby infant formulas from the day that they were born. Breastfeeding is said to be avoided in China or perhaps done in minimal states.

It was even joked around that this melamine contamination was done on purpose to promote breastfeeding. Some are calling it serious. If so, this is really not a funny claim. Babies are to sensitive to be made as guinea pigs and if that were the case, you can just imagine the number of parents who would get enraged at China right now, both foreign and local folks.
