There are a lot of pressures on parents, on top of the more understandable issues when someone has a child (nutrition, health, and safety), many parents who work are finding themselves wondering if they have failed their children because they cannot always be there. While it used to be one parent could stay home while the other worked, those days are long gone and aren’t coming back. While yes, many still count themselves lucky to even be employed right now and have the ability to put food on the table, and get their kids what they need- there is still a lot of guilt when a parent (or both) have to work and put their kids in daycare, or under someone else’s supervision.

It is a tough decision, and worrying about it is normal. With so many choices out there, it’s natural to worry about if you have made the right one or not. Worrying in general can easily make things seem worse, and as a parent you obviously want what is best for your children and your family.

Putting food on the table is important, and for those who are worried that their care choices may harm their child- don’t. Many studies are showing that kids in daycare come out fine, and the experience itself can help children to reach important social milestones sooner than peers who may not have has as much contact with those in the same age range as themselves. It can be hard, but it won’t ‘damage’ your child. Kids can be a lot more resilient than many realize, and daycare won’t harm your child.

The different options in acquiring child custody are legal custody, physical custody, split custody, third party custody and combinations of custody.

Couples that aren’t getting along well usually end up getting a divorce. For those with children, another problem that adds up is fighting over child custody. This is a matter of wary consideration. You should understand the terminologies used by Sacramento family law attorneys and the like. Otherwise, you may end up getting the wrong kind of child custody and just be left regretting. Read and understand each option to guide you the right way.

Legal custody

This first option pertains to acquiring the legal authority to decide on major matters on behalf of the child or children. For instance, you get to decide where the child will be getting his education and what type would it be. You also have the right to choose the form of religious upbringing of the child and you can also make a decision on non-emergency medical arrangement. You can also settle where the child will be living without the legal interference of anybody else. Legal custody has two subcategories which are Sole Legal Custody and Joint Legal Custody. First, the parent with the Sole Legal Custody is the only person who can make major decisions for the child. On the other hand, Joint Legal Custody refers to both parents having the legal authority to decide on major matters about the child.

Physical custody

Physical Custody pertains to where the child will be residing most of the time, where he will live, eat and sleep. This child custody option has three denominations namely: Sole Physical Custody, Joint Physical Custody and Bird’s Nest Custody. In Sole Physical Custody, the child only resides at one place and in some cases; the non-custodial parent may visit and have sleepovers. Joint Physical Custody is also referred as “Shared Parenting”, “Dual Residence” or “Shared Custody”. In this arrangement, the child lives in both parents’ custody and the time spent with one is approximately equal with the other parent. Lastly, Bird’s Nest Custody refers to the child residing in one place and the parents will have to rotate in and out of that home. Same as Joint Physical Custody, the division of time spent is equal.

Split custody

Split Custody is applicable for parent with more than one child. In this situation, the decision depends partly on the children. If they prefer different parents, the court may grant this type of custody.

Third party custody

In this situation, neither of the parents are granted custody but somebody else such as grandparents, aunts or uncles or any close family friend. This option is applicable to those children whose parents are not fit to take care of them, whose parents have passed away or if the child prefers to be under third party custody.

Combinations of custody

Combinations of one type with the other can also be arranged. Common blends are sole legal and sole physical, joint legal but sole physical or joint physical but sole legal. There are also rare cases wherein the court orders joint legal with joint physical, only if both parents agree and can cooperate in the upbringing of their child.

Decide this with a lawyer so as to understand more. Never settle on decisions with the other parent outside of court because this doesn’t settle things but only provide temporary custody.

Overly protective parents beware. Though it doesn’t hurt to be protective to your little tykes, don’t overdo it. Termed as “Helicopter Parents”, studies show that being overprotective can leave a lasting impact on a child’s personality.

The study, which surveyed college freshman, is one of the first to try to define exactly what helicopter parenting is, and measure it. The term was originally coined by college admissions personnel when they started to notice a change in parents of prospective students – parents would call the admissions office and try to intervene in a process that had previously just been between the student and the college.

The results were presented May 29 at the Association of Psychological Science Convention in Boston.

Today is the day that many tech geeks (and some not so tech geeks) have been salivating over for a while now, Apple’s latest offering the iPad has been the things that PR dreams are made of (for the most part) has officially hit store shelved today.

With the success of the iPhone, and it’s many apps, including a ton for parents, should you get one now? Or wait for the all but guaranteed second, and third generation device? Right now, there is already quite a few apps in the iPad App store. There’s one from Parenting Today , games, and even some fun and educational offerings, and a ton guaranteed to be on the way.

The problem is, that it is all great right now but with Apples way of releasing updates to their devices that would just seem logical to have in the first generation- it may be best for you to wait. While there may be a lot of people right now who absolutely need it right now, if you can make use of your iPhone for a bit longer- it may be best to wait.

It really does look like Apple’s newest offering with be right up there with the iPhone, especially with usability. Although, it’s not really a laptop and it’s not an iPhone. It is some hybrid of the two, and it was designed with the everyday person in mind. So it should be very usable, even though at this point it remains to be seen if it could replace the iPhone as the next big must have for the stroller set.

What do you think? Will you be getting an iPad?

There’s been a lot of talk lately over how hard parents have found arguing with their kids to get them to clean, go to bed, or do something else. The talk itself isn’t new at all, but the newer trend that seems to be coming along with it is.

It’s an odd idea behind it, but many who have tried it really swear that it does work. The whole idea is not saying ‘no’ to almost anything (reasonable requests only, naturally). Parents who have tried the technique swear that it created a calmer home environment.

However, you really have to wonder if the best method to having a calmer home is to limit the word no. After all, isn’t ‘no’ usually for a fairly good reason (avoiding a huge and rather catastrophic mess should be a very good reason)?

Then again, maybe we do overuse no and limiting it down may help us realize the motivations behind when we say it.

So, would you omit ‘no’ from your vocabulary? Or, is this new trend just going too far?
